Native seed cleaning and extraction workshop 11th Feb 2023

Yass Landcare Community nursery will be having a native seed cleaning and extraction workshop on Saturday 11 February from 9.30 at 1428 Yass Valley Way behind the Yass Community Centre or Yass Men's Shed. Please bring any seed you may have collected but if you don't have any we have the following seed which needs to be cleaned and packaged up for future sowing.

Acacia buxifolia (Box-leaf wattle)

Carex appressa

Lomandra longifolia

Poa labillardieri  (River Tussock)

Cassia longifolia (Shiny Cassinia)

Acacia verniciflua (Varnish wattle)

Indigofera australis (Australian Indigo)

Dodonaea viscosa (Narrow-Leaf Hop bush)

So you see we have grasses, a pea plant and several wattles - each will require a slightly different processing method to extract its seed.

Allocasuarina verticillata (Drooping She-Oak)

This is a small, upright evergreen tree, usually with a rounded crown. The bark is grey-brown and furrowed. Leaves are tiny pointed scales arranged around pendulous branchlets. On male trees, flower spikes begin to swell at the ends of branchlets in autumn and become showy orange-yellow tassels in late autumn and winter. Female trees produce small red and cream fluffy flowers on their branches in winter. These develop into brown oval seed cones which split lengthways to release dark-brown, winged seeds. Height 10m Spread 5m.

Further information from the National Arboretum.

If you think that you have a mature stand of these trees but need assistance with plant ID please contact Kath as YAN can provide plant ID assistance for plants on our Climate Ready list.

Landcare nursery managers within YAN are requesting regional landholders who have large numbers of mature plants, which are part of the YAN Climate Ready list, to consider collecting local seed when the seed matures in coming months. If you are keen to assist in this venture please email Kath

Allocasuarina littoralis (Block She-oak)

Allocasuarina littoralis, commonly known as Black Sheoak, Black She-oak, or River Black-oak, is an endemic medium-sized Australian tree. The seeds of this species have been found to be a food source for the Glossy Black-Cockatoo. Growing these plants in small stands between open space will help encourage the return of this endangered native bird. Further information is available here.
