Nursery visit from Upper Shoalhaven Landcare

Last Friday, 7th May 2021, YAN hosted a productive and enjoyable visit from several members of the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare committee. Upper Shoalhaven Landcare is considering opening their own native nursery and growing Climate Ready species for their region, so are keen to see how other Landcare groups are going about it. Following a chat at the Yass Landcare nursery, we visited one the YAN nurseries on private land. Besides talking about the ins and outs of nursery infrastructure and growing methods etc, it was great to learn about another Landcare group and what they are up to more generally.

Climate Ready planting at Rugosa

A small group of enthusiastic volunteers helped to plant 126 native trees and shrubs at Rugosa between Gunning and Murrumbateman this morning. Everything was planted, watered, and protected with tree guards in just half a day. John augered the holes with a tractor which made the work easy, and we were then able to relax over a delicious lunch made by Michelle. This is one of several supporting trial sites in the Climate Ready Revegetation Project which will help us to understand the survival of plants grown from local seed versus plants grown from seed from other climates.

Visit from Adrian Zammit, CEO of Landcare NSW

Adrian Zammit, CEO of Landcare NSW, was in Murrumbateman on Thursday 29th May to meet with representatives from YAN and Gearys Gap/Wamboin Landcare. It was a very enjoyable and productive visit. We were able to tell Adrian all about the YAN nurseries and the Climate Ready Revegetation Project, amongst other things. We started at Murrumbateman Landcare Nursery, before having a picnic lunch at Murrumbateman Village Grassy Woodland, and finishing with a visit to Mountain Vale to check out the Climate Ready trial planting. Thanks for coming Adrian!

Barton Highway upgrade meeting & site visit

On Wednesday 21st May a number of YAN representatives were involved in a meeting and site visit on the Barton Highway upgrade. The meeting was organised by Ginninderra Catchment Group as an opportunity to discuss and look at the planned work. It was a productive afternoon - we got to talk about a number of concerns related to the environmental impact of the project and learn more about the approach of Transport NSW, their efforts to minimise damage and mitigate impacts. There was a shared interest in keeping on with communication and hopefully working together in the future.
