Our Climate Ready Revegetation work supports the long-term survival of native plants in the Yass Valley region of NSW under changing climate conditions. Using the latest science and driven by community effort, this initiative now involves over 100 people across our network.

At our three Landcare nurseries, we produce around 15,000 climate-ready tubestock each year. We do this by focusing on two key strategies:

1) Selecting resilient species:  We choose local plant species that are not only native to our region but also occur in areas already experiencing the hotter conditions we expect in the future.

2) Boosting genetic diversity: We source seeds from a wide range of provenances to enhance the genetic diversity of these species. This helps them adapt to environmental changes over generations.

These tubestock are then planted throughout the region by landholders and volunteers, helping to secure the future of our native ecosystems.

Driven by a strong desire to take positive action in the face of climate change, volunteers from the Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups (YAN) launched the Climate Ready Revegetation project in 2018.

Early on, the project benefited from the invaluable advice and support of Dr. Nola Hancock, Dr. Linda Broadhurst, and AdaptNSW. The current project team includes the original volunteer founders, a project officer, and the Yass Area Network (YAN) coordinator.

The project has received crucial financial backing from the NSW Government. This includes seed funding in its early years and a substantial grant from the Environmental Trust, which is funding a part-time project officer from spring 2023 to spring 2027. We are also grateful for the annual grants from Michael King, which fund the purchase of seeds and other essential nursery supplies.

Over time, the climate-ready approach has become so fundamental to our work that it is no longer considered a separate project, but an embedded part of our core activities.
