On 13 August, Vanessa Whelan and Sue Bestow will come and talk with Sutton landcare about the National
Landcare program. They both work for the Australian Government and together with their colleagues, they
are delivering the $1billion National Landcare Program (NLP).
Their talk at the Sutton Landcare Group titled ‘Protected and Productive Environments’ will focus on the
agricultural component of the NLP. They will present some background information on the program, looking
at Landcare’s journey so far, what it has achieved and what this next phase of the program is looking to
deliver. They will discuss the two main elements of the NLP, the Regional Land Partnerships component,
which is delivered through a network of 54 Management Units nationally and the Smart Farms component,
which is currently supporting over 200 projects Australia wide, and there are more to come. Their talk will
also give examples of Landcare work being done locally and other work that is relevant to the Sutton area.
There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions about Landcare, so you are encouraged to attend
and take this opportunity to talk to representatives of the government directly.
The meeting will start at 7.30 at the Sutton Primary School. It will be followed by supper, and an opportunity
to ask questions, and talk with other people from our community.
We hope to see you there.
Arnold Dekker – Coordinator Sutton Landcare Group.

Our members and the wider community very frequently ask for advice regarding suitable native plantings for their properties or on public land. The September MLG meeting will aim to answer some of these questions through a discussion format led by plant ecologist Sue McIntyre.
Many MLG members have long experience with planting in our district and they will contribute on the night with their expertise, relating their successes and lessons learned.
For more info, see MLG's Facebook page and webpage.

On 8 October Dr Richard Stirzaker from CSIRO will come and talk with the Sutton Landcare Group about improving crop yields through better management of irrigation water, soil nutrients and salt. Dr Stirzaker is an authority on soils and soil moisture.
As a part of his work at CSIRO Agriculture and Food, he is involved with the Virtual Irrigation Academy (VIA) where anyone can learn about improving crop yields.
For the vast majority of those who use water to grow food, there is no simple way to know how well irrigation is managed.
The 'Chameleon system' is a way of measuring soil water by producing colour patterns. These patterns tell you whether the soil is too wet or dry, how deep rain and irrigation moves into the soil and where roots are taking up water. They believe that water, nutrients, and salt have to be measured together in order to really understand what is happening when we add water to the land in order to grow food.
The work is primarily funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and is directed at farmers in developing countries.
VIA has become a global network where monitoring sensors are buried on farms around the world. Each crop that is grown and monitored provides a unique colour pattern of water, nitrate and salt, and data are shared on the VIA website.
In an interview, Dr Stirzaker said: "Soil physics is boring to most but turning water into food for the vulnerable on earth is not."
We hope you can join us on the 8th of October; Sutton School; 7.30 pm.
The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions and supper.

You are invited to attend a one-day workshop in Boorowa, tailored for local sheep producers; to explore decision making in recovery from drought.

Join us in a hands on workshop facilitated by Mark Gardner; where we chew the numbers on different options to feed livestock. This is not a 'How to ' day, it's about 'Why' and 'If it works for you? ' There will be discussions & questions and time to explore your own budgets.
Maximise opportunities and be ready for the drought to break.
Ted O'Kane NSW DPI Rural Resilience will look at what drives us to make decisions.

He is an accredited Holistic Management educator and EOV Master Verifier with the Savory Institute and employed as a NSW TAFE teacher for the Holistic Management Diploma. Tony is joint founder and Executive Chair of the Australian Holistic Management Co-operative that delivers EOV and Land to Market Australia.

What: A discussion about Soil Health and Holistic Farming
Drought, fires, floods, pandemic! What’s next? Are we under attack from nature? In our personal lives? In our farming? In our attempts to manage land? Are these national and global catastrophes connected? What do they have to do with soil?
Bring your questions, topics and priorities for a Murrumbateman Landcare discussion.
During this session we will have the opportunity to discuss how Allan Savory has developed Holistic Management over the last five decades as a straightforward approach to managing the complexity of our challenges: ecological, financial, social. The Holistic Management framework can show us how natural disasters may be linked, including to our own management decisions, and can provide practical tools that can be used to manage our land.
Now, Allan’s Savory Institute is offering a new initiative that links robust monitoring and verification of production farmland, with the opportunity for businesses and consumers to choose spending in a way that builds biodiversity and soil health. More than 40 baseline monitoring sites have been established through Ecological Outcome Verification in Australia, and new businesses are coming on board as market partners of Land to Market Australia.
Where: On Zoom in the comfort of your own home.
When: Jacqui will invite members into the meeting from 6.30pm on 6th August with the discussion starting at 7.00pm.
RSVPs: email Bob by 5th August but earlier would help.
NOTE: When you join the meeting, if you don’t have Zoom already installed the system will ask you if you want to either install Zoom or run the session through your Browser.
Note: Tony’s Presentation Will be loaded to our website for future reference and for those who can’t make the meeting.

Like everywhere else, we will abide by the COVID-19 rules, which means social distancing, hand sanitising and leaving the classroom as clean as possible. We are very pleased the Sutton Primary School has been supportive of Landcare once again.\N If you feel uncomfortable joining us in person, you can follow the presentation via Zoom. Please contact us via email on sutton.landcare@gmail.com and we will email you the registration details.\N The presentation will be given by Dr Brad Opdyke from the ANU. He will update us on his research at Lake George. He sent us the following abstract:\N"When we started the Lake George project the correlation between warmer climate and lake levels in Lake George was and is pretty clear, i.e. if sea surface temperatures around the northwest of Australia were high then the area around Lake George certainly enjoyed more rain, and more consistent rain. However, as most people know from their own experience on their own properties, the last several decades have been some of the driest in the past century. So, what gives? Why the disconnect? We know the planet is heating up and the waters of the Indo-Pacific warm pool are heating up as well. As the project has progressed, Brad learned more about the detailed climatology of southeast Australia and importantly the difference between relatively stable climate states and a ‘transient’ state. The transient, from a climate modelers perspective is the path you follow from one relatively stable climate to the next. At the moment we are in a dramatic transient. To cut a longer story short, the transient state can be very different to more stable conditions. The good news is that a stable slightly hotter world will probably be significantly wetter and more humid than the conditions we are now experiencing. The bad news is that during the transient, while temperatures are rapidly increasing, we will experience wildly variable fluctuations in rainfall, from year to year. And like the stock market during COVID-19 the amplitude of the swings in rainfall, for example, will be extreme, and probably will be more extreme if the global temperature rise is allowed to continue to accelerate".\N With the COVID-19 rules in place, we will not be able to follow our presentation with supper, but there will be an opportunity to ask questions.\N We hope to see you there.\N Arnold Dekker\NCoordinator - Sutton Landcare Group X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:

With the COVID-19 rules in place, we will not be able to follow our presentation with supper, but there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
We hope to see you there.
